Most first-time Thailand itineraries fail because they try to cover too much. A week of Bangkok + Chiang Mai + 3 islands looks great on paper, but you spend half your time in transit, not in the country. The two routes below are paced to actually feel like Thailand: a city, a contrast, and a place to stop and breathe. Pick the 7-day if your time is tight; the 10-day if you can stretch it.
If you have 14 days
Use our full 2-week itinerary — Bangkok, Chiang Mai, and the Andaman beaches with day-by-day detail. The 10-day route below is a compressed version.
Route 1: The 7-Day Sample
Best for: tight timelines, business-trip extensions, returning Asia travelers who want a focused taste.
Days 1-3 — Bangkok
Arrive at BKK or DMK. Stay near BTS Asok or Phrom Phong (neighborhood guide). Day 1: settle in, sunset Chao Phraya river ferry, dinner in Yaowarat. Day 2: Grand Palace + Wat Pho + Wat Arun temple loop, massage in the afternoon, rooftop bar at night (Sky Bar, Vertigo, or Above Eleven). Day 3: Chatuchak Market (weekends) or Jim Thompson House + Siam shopping, dinner in Thonglor.
Days 4-7 — Pick Your Second Region
Option A — Chiang Mai (4 days): Fly from Bangkok (1h 15m, ฿900-2,200). Day 4: Old City temple circuit + Sunday Walking Street if Sunday. Day 5: Doi Suthep sunrise, afternoon in Nimman cafés. Day 6: Ethical elephant sanctuary or full-day Thai cooking class. Day 7: fly back to Bangkok for international departure.
Option B — Phuket or Krabi (4 days): Fly from Bangkok (1h 30m, ฿900-2,200). Day 4: travel + beach day. Day 5: Phi Phi or 4-island day-trip. Day 6: relaxed beach day with massage and dinner. Day 7: fly back to Bangkok for international departure.
7-day cost estimate
Mid-range: ฿24,000-฿38,000 ($720-$1,140) per person, excluding international flights. Run real numbers →
Route 2: The 10-Day Classic
Best for: most first-time visitors. Hits all three pillars (city, north, beach) without burnout.
Days 1-3 — Bangkok
Same as Route 1 above. Start near BTS Asok or Phrom Phong. Three full days covers the iconic temple loop, food immersion, and a market or museum.
Days 4-6 — Chiang Mai
Fly from Bangkok (or take the overnight train as a Thailand travel rite — book 2nd-class sleeper at 12Go.Asia 30+ days ahead). Day 4: Old City temple circuit. Day 5: Doi Suthep + Nimman afternoon. Day 6: cooking class or ethical elephant sanctuary.
Days 7-10 — Andaman or Gulf Beach
Fly Chiang Mai → Phuket or Krabi (2 hours direct or via Bangkok). Day 7: travel + beach day. Day 8: Phi Phi or Hong Islands day-trip. Day 9: Railay (if Krabi base) or Bangtao beach club (if Phuket base). Day 10: morning at the beach + afternoon flight back to Bangkok or direct international departure from HKT.
10-day cost estimate
Mid-range: ฿32,000-฿55,000 ($950-$1,650) per person, excluding international flights. Add 10-15% buffer for shopping and unplanned splurges.
The transitions matter
For both routes, book your domestic Thailand flights in advance — they go up 30-50% inside two weeks. Bangkok ↔ Chiang Mai is cheapest from Don Mueang (DMK); Bangkok ↔ Phuket/Krabi has more options from Suvarnabhumi (BKK).
What to skip on a first trip
- 3+ islands. Pick one beach base and day-trip from there. Island-hopping eats your time.
- Border runs to Cambodia/Laos. First trip should be Thailand-focused. You can always come back.
- Pai if you only have 10 days. The 3-hour drive each way costs you almost two days. Save it for trip 2.
- Khao San Road as a base. Visit for an hour, leave. Stay near BTS instead.
Pre-trip checklist
- 3-6 weeks before: Confirm passport validity (6+ months from arrival). Run the visa checker.
- 2-3 weeks before: Book domestic flights and first-night accommodations.
- 1-2 weeks before: Buy travel insurance (must cover motorbike accidents).
- 3 days before: Submit your TDAC at tdac.immigration.go.th. Free.
- Day of departure: Pack passport, travel insurance card, $200-400 USD in crisp $100 bills.
